Modern Family Effect

Modern Familywon an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for the second time in a row in ‘10 and ‘11. Since it premiered in 2009, it has made news because of its unconventional cast of characters and plotlines.

The show follows three families who are all going through life’s trails and tribulations. The most entertaining part of the show revolves around the family of Cameron and Mitchell who are two gay men in a committed relationship.

They paint the picture for Americans who have no idea what this looks like, like me. Cameron and Mitchell are also parents of a little Vietnamese baby named Lily, who I think is adorable.

As the show is climbing the ladder of success, a trend is starting to establish in the country with the latest news concerning Gay-marriage.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that support for gay marriage has accelerated in the last three years. The rate in which support has been measured in opinion polls has increased, from 1.5 percentage points to 4 percentage points.

In this year alone, New Jersey and Washington have passed legislation allowing same-sex marriage.
Earlier in February, California's9th Court of Appeals ruled in favor of gay-marriage and Maine is also moving towards a referendum that will legalize it.

On Friday, Marylandalso passed legislation that if signed by their governor, Marylandwould become the 8th state in the country to allow same-sex marriage.

Will this movement towards equal rights for all individual continue? As Modern Family makes its way into our homes, will the exposure to Cameron and Mitchell’s relationship ease those hearts that harden when this issue comes up?
